Region
Located in Maine’s western mountain region, the Sugarloaf area is home to countless opportunities for outdoor recreation.
In addition to the world-class alpine skiing, the winter months provide activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and snowmobiling. Both the Outdoor Center and Antigravity Complex offer a range of activities ideal for all ages. And with the first stages of the Maine Huts and Trails project now complete, visitors will find a unique opportunity for overnight Nordic treks. During the summer months hikers will enjoy the proximity of the Appalachian Trail, which passes over the backside of the mountain, as well as countless overnight and day hikes throughout the surrounding mountains. Additional summertime activities include swimming, fly-fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing and more.
The town of Kingfield is just a short drive down the road, and is home to several antique shops and restaurants, as well as a grocery store, laundromat, hardware store and more. In 2007 Kingfield was ranked in the book “101 Best Outdoor Towns: Unspoiled Places to Visit, Live and Play,” by veteran outdoor writers Sarah Tuff and Greg Melville.
